A Conversation With Lawrence Tyrpa
What made you want to get started doing graphic design?
Since childhood, I was surrounded with card games, video games and board games. As I’ve always enjoyed drawing and creating things, I would even start designing my own ”games” as a kid. This passion still remains with me. I later got some art & design education which allows me to continue the journey as a creator in a professional way.
What are your biggest design influences?
I think my biggest inspirations are other games (not only card games). One of my binders with my TCG collection is where I like to keep a variety of games. I like to study how different templates are composed and I also have a section for the card backs.
What was the creative process like for you working on Starcrossed?
I was really happy to be able to work on Starcrossed. Right from the start, I knew that would be a project I’ll enjoy thanks to its theme and the design goal I was told. The challenge was to create a look that’s clean, modern and rather minimalistic but also entertaining at the same time.
What anime or trading card games are you a fan of?
There’s always some anime I’m watching and I love many of them. But three series influenced me the most for sure: Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh! and Naruto. No surprise Pokémon is also my favorite trading card game!
What creative projects do you have coming up that people should check out?
I’m currently developing my own TCG called Venapoint. There’s fictional energy called Vena flowing through all creatures. Player’s goal is to defeat opponent’s units and collect their energy in form of Venapoints. What I’m creating is a pretty opened world with enough space for both fantasy and sci-fi themes. I plan to create some short 2D animations based in this universe, too!
Lawrence is Starcrossed’s main graphic designer, and created many visual aspects of the game, including card layouts, icons, and the Starcrossed playmat.
